EUMSSI at GMF 2014

Deutsche Welle successfully presented the EUMSSI project during the Global Media Forum 2014 event in Bonn, Germany. The Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum is a congress with international reach. Having steadily grown since its launch in 2008, more than 2,300 people from 120 nations attended the most recent conference in July 2014 to discuss issues surrounding the topic of this year’s conference, “From Information to Participation – Challenges for the Media”.

The EUMSSI booth in the exhibition area attracted many attendees. Deutsche Welle used the presence to exchange and share their knowledge about the EU co-funded research project EUMSSI with many visitors from SMEs, media and academia.

Many media professionals we’ve talked to acknowledged that they would benefit from an event-understanding software service such as the one aimed at by EUMSSI. Keeping track of new and relevant items for an ongoing event seems to be major challenge in the news gathering process. Another concern they’ve shared with us is the demand for reliable verification tools to analyse user-generated content, e.g. image and especially video material disseminated through diverse social media channels (e.g. Twitter, Instagram or YouTube).

The Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum thus proved to be an inspiring and motivating opportunity to gather new ideas and proposals for the EUMSSI system.
